'Grapes from Devon Valley. 100% whole-bunch fermentation. Enticing aromatics of violets and herbs before dark fruit and a little tilled earth. The palate is strikingly pure – great fruit definition, racy acidity and powdery tannins, the finish long and dry. A lighter vintage of what anyway tends to be a lighter rendition of the variety – has a real “nervy” quality to it. Alcohol: 12.51%.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 94/100

'Syrah is a grape that we both have a soft spot for. We think there are some really special and unique sites and plantings of Syrah in Stellenbosch. These grapes are from a great site in the Devon Valley. It is planted on a very rich, deep, red soil with high clay content.
The grapes are left 100% whole bunch, and lightly stomped by foot to extract a little juice. Very gentle pumpovers are performed once or twice daily, as we want to minimise extraction and maintain as many whole bunches as possible. 2020 was pressed after 10 days on skins into old puncheons for 10 months.' – Jeanine and Mick Craven, Winemakers

Producer information As Stellenbosch revolutionaries, Mick and Jeanine Craven’s constant experimentation and their willingness to fight for great little parcels, have made them the poster couple for bringing whole-bunch, skin contact, early picking and all things geeky to Stellenbosch. These Young Gunners are the Stellenbosch champions of light, yet complex wines. Producing single-vineyard wines only, these 2 winemakers know their vineyards like the back of their hands. ‘Craven is one of the most interesting wine projects in South Africa. It's part of the rediscovery of the best vineyard sites in Stellenbosch that's currently underway, with a whole group of young guns looking to find the gems and make interesting wines from them,’ says Jamie Goode.
