Colmant, Brut Chardonnay 750ml NVSouth Africa, Western Cape
Colmant Blanc de Blanc blend, created from a special selection of Chardonnay, is the epitome of Chardonnay expression - fine, elegant and fresh.
The Brut Chardonnay is the most awarded Blanc de Blancs in the history of the Amorim Cap Classique Challenge, having won 5 times in the last 6 six years entered.
'Assured & beautifully crafted blanc de blancs dry sparkler, latest NV with increased oaked portion (34%), reserve-wine component (14.5%) & time on lees (48 months) over previous, creating a perfect foil for the ethereal, delicate mousse & bouquet.' – Platters SA Wine Guide 2019, 93/100
'Lightly wooded, with 20% reserve wine and nearly four years on lees, this Blanc de Blancs is based on the 2015 vintage. Toasty and tangy, with large bubbles, some baking spice and brioche flavours and some phenolics on the finish. 2019-22.' – Tim Atkin SA Special Report 2019, 90/100
'On the eye its a delicate light gold hue with lime green highlights and fine persistent bubbles. On the nose its lime blossom aromatics vie with fresh citrus, distinctive green apple vibrance and richer notes of toasted bread and brioche from long maturation. On the palate the lively bubbles carry flavours of vivacious - and typical - citrus zest set against a creamy backdrop of minerality, a faint sheen of wood, roasted nuts and broad, mature note of bread and toast.' – Winemaker
Colmant Brut Chardonnay is made from fruit off selected vineyards in Franschhoek, Elgin and Robertson. The aim is finesse, freshness and elegance on this 100% Chardonnay bubbly. True to house style, a portion of the base wine (15%) was barrel fermented to add a wooded, structured nuance to the final product. Similarly, 20% of the wine is specially selected from the previous year's harvest, kept in prime French oak for the purpose of adding complexity, intensity and harmony. Rich and creamy toast, brioche character develops as the wine undergoes its long 45 month maturation as a steady 14C before final release.
