'My first olfactory impression of the Pündericher village wine from grey slate is that it seems slightly more herbal than its siblings, although this is probably mainly due to the effects of spontaneous fermentation. On the palate the herbal flavour with elements of mint, thyme and an incy-wincy nuance of parsley appears to suggest that grey slate is less assertive in terms of taste than its blue and red rivals. Acidity may not be higher but feels more prominent, adding a certain vibrancy to the finish. 2020 – 2027.' – Michael Schmidt,, 17/20

'Busch's 2018 Riesling Vom Grauen Schiefer is the purest and most stony-flavored of the trio wines from red-blue-gray slate soils. The Riesling from gray slate is almost unwelcoming in its ascetic, stony, crunchy, lemony and yeasty purity, which might be challenging for beginners looking for fruit but is surely exciting for true Riesling freaks. The nose is definitely complex and develops with air, becoming finer and slightly more fruity. It's definitely a wine for nerds, though. The palate is very elegant and refined, revealing a full-bodied palate with rich, intense and concentrated yet also juicy fruit and remarkable complexity on the sustainable and mineral finish. 12.5% alcohol. Tasted from AP 3019 in July 2020. 2020 - 2030.' – Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, 91/100

'There is an appealingly Muscat-like suggestion of orange blossom and elder flower on the nose, which links up with juicy white peach, subtle nuttiness and cooling green herbal inflections of basil and mint on a glossy, full but not heavy palate, then carries into a lusciously lingering, soothing yet refreshing finish.' – David Schildknecht, Vinous, 90/100

Producer information Clemens is the 5th-generation winemaker at his family estate and began using organic practices in 1984. Later a pioneer in biodynamics, Clemens Busch is now a role model for natural, but precise German winemaking. Unlike most of the Mosel region, however, Clemens focuses on dry, elegant Rieslings that express the complex terroir of this historic region. Their unique soils in the town of Pündericherallow them to produce many iterations of the Riesling grape. Clemens Busch is based on the 3 types of slate – red, blue and grey – each imparting different characteristics and styling.
