'Their entry-level dry Riesling is made up of their declassified ‘Grand Cru’ vineyards on the Marienburg, as well as some younger vines in their secondary vineyards of Pündericher Goldlay and Pündericher Rosenberg. It is fermented with indigenous yeasts in 60% used, 10-hectolitre barrels and 40% stainless steel. The nose is floral and waxy with exotic spice and dried herbs. Light to medium-bodied at 10.5% alc., there is a lot of yellow-fruited concentration on the palate with a citrus-edged acidity. The finish is stony, smoky and saline. Tasting notes on the 2018 vintage:
'Bottled at the end of June, the 2019 Riesling Trocken intermixes ripe and juicy Riesling fruit with a delicate slate aroma. Lush and round on the palate, this is a delicate and even salty Riesling with juicy fruit and a fine Ribera structure on the finish. It has 10.5% alcohol yet is intense and expressive—stunning. 'The 2019er Marienburg GG, as it is referred to on the main part of the label, was fermented spontaneously in traditional oak casks. It proves still remarkably backward and does not reveal much beyond some discreet notes of smoke, almond (from reduction), wet stone, yellow fruits, a hint of mirabelle, and spices. The wine is still slightly on the sharp side at this stage, both on the palate and in the finely chiseled finish. It is only in the after-taste that the wine’s underlying juicy and fresh side makes a guest star appearance at this stage. The wine may prove slightly non-saying at this stage but make no mistake: This is a beauty in the making ... if one has the patience to let it mature for 5 years and more. The potential is huge. 'A very fresh fragrance of green fruit greets the olfactory senses. Twenty years ago the mere sight of a Mosel Riesling trocken with 10.5% alcohol would have sent a shiver down my spine. This streamlined dry estate Riesling from Clemens Busch does not quite have that effect, although it’s pretty mouth-watering with crisp green apple and brazen acidity. And trocken means dry! Producer information Clemens is the 5th-generation winemaker at his family estate and began using organic practices in 1984. Later a pioneer in biodynamics, Clemens Busch is now a role model for natural, but precise German winemaking. Unlike most of the Mosel region, however, Clemens focuses on dry, elegant Rieslings that express the complex terroir of this historic region. Their unique soils in the town of Pündericherallow them to produce many iterations of the Riesling grape. Clemens Busch is based on the 3 types of slate – red, blue and grey – each imparting different characteristics and styling.
