Mourvèdre is a late-ripening variety that thrives in abundant sunshine and has an affinity for cooling sea breezes. The most celebrated single-varietal expressions come from Bandol – the grape’s home on the Provence coast. When Mourvèdre is great, it offers the elegant structure of Bordeaux combined with the floral charm of Burgundy. Waterkloof proprietor Paul Boutinot is a lover of Bandol and found in Waterkloof the perfect site to grow Mourvèdre. Situated on the False Bay coast, it offers a very similar aspect, sea influence and climate to that of Bandol.

Tasting notes:
Waterkloof follows biodynamic farming practices.

‘One of a comparatively small number of Cape Mourvèdres – it's a variety that generally needs friends to perform at its best - this is suitably dense, savoury and compact with aromas of lavender and incense and plenty of grip and backbone. Should age well in bottle. Drink 2020-27.’ – Tim Atkin MW, 91/100 'A complex wine that keeps me going back to my glass with a fusion of savoury and sage notes and supple raspberry and dark fruit. It can be paired with a variety of dishes, but should show well with wild boar or lamb on the grill.' – Nadia Barnard, Winemaker

About Waterkloof:
Pioneering biodynamic winemaking in South Africa with their lunar cycles, deep-bed system, worm house and portable chicken coop, Waterkloof are unassumingly elegant and sophisticated in their approach to farming and winemaking. The Somerset West estate places a strong emphasis on minimal intervention and gentle handling to preserve the natural ‘circle of life’ in all areas on the farm, and this is reflected in their wines, which show a commonality of sophisticated restraint. Their white wines are particularly food-friendly and have received high acclaim internationally from critics such as Jamie Goode and the Independent Wine Review.
