Can Sumoi
'One of the Top 100 wineries in the world'
The wines of Can Sumoi are high-altitude, low intervention expressions from biodynamically grown ancestral Spanish varieties. Found in mountainous Penedès, the project is a collaboration between childhood friends Francesc Escala and Pepe Raventós, who hails from one of the region’s leading viticultural families – with a vine growing history stretching back to 1497!
Can Sumoi is going from strength to strength, and they’ve once again been recognised as ‘one of the Top 100 wineries in the world’ by US wine magazine, Wine & Spirits. Perfect for summer, their 2023 Garnatxa Blanca is bright and pure with notes of pear and lemon blossom, ‘like holding a pearl in your mouth’, says JancisRobinson.com. The beautiful 2023 La Rosa is Provençale in style. It's a ‘vibrant and vivid’ (Vinous) pale-pink rosado, made up of a blend of Sumoll – a red grape variety – and Xarel·lo, a local white variety.
Finally, last year’s best-seller from the bodega is back. The Xarel·lo from 2023 is made from 50-year old vines, matured mostly in concrete and stainless steel. It’s light, clean and fresh with white flowers, lime, bay leaf and fennel aromatics. ‘Long, introvert and so understated it's a statement. Super-elegant’ (JancisRobinson.com).
To hone his skills, Pepe Raventós – the Prince of Penedès – worked across Europe with the likes of Hubert Lamy in Burgundy and Didier Dagueneau in the Loire. ‘It gave me the understanding that the critical aspect of winemaking (especially when you believe your wines can be very grand and age very well) is first the vineyard, second, the vineyard and third, the vineyard.’
