Bordeaux is back

with the phenomenal 2019s!

'I tasted phenomenal wines in every appellation' – Antonio Galloni on the 2019s

Bordeaux 2019 has finally hit our shores and the wines are superb! It’s widely known that 2019 is the second in a trilogy of excellent vintages (2018, 2019, 2020) – comparisons have already been drawn to the legendary trio of 1988, 1989 and 1990. With similar patterns of very wet and cool winters and dry, warm summers, the wines exude depth and structure. However, 2019 seems to have the edge on 2018, showing more clarity and finesse.

Our best value picks for 2019 are Sauternes dry white Clos des Lunes (R320) and Médoc red Du Retout (R350) – a classic Bordeaux that’s approachable now but will age for a decade. Also from the Bernard stable, Domaine de Chevalier Rouge represents some of the finest value of the vintage at the top-end. With 97 points from both the Wine Advocate and Antonio Galloni, William Kelley calls it 'a magical wine in the making'.

Bordeaux is back with the phenomenal 2019s!

Grand Mayne is up-and-coming in St-Émilion and the ‘superb’ 2019 by Jean-Antoine Nony, eliciting 95 points from Neal Martin. d’Issan in Margaux is ‘excellent’, says Neal, and continues to offer fantastic quality at a fraction of the price of the big names. Doisy-Daëne is a Wine Cellar favourite and 2019 is another stellar wine (96 NM; 95 AG). At R550 per 375ml, this is some of the best Barsac/Sauternes on the market, with a drinking window up to 2060!

From the region’s superstars, we have limited stock of the double 100/100 Margaux as well as two other 100-pointers – Montrose (100 AG) and Vieux Chateau Certan (100 WA). Don’t miss Cos d’Estournel (97 NM; 97+ WA), Ducru-Beaucaillou (98 NM; 98 JA), Lynch-Bages (97 DEC; 96 NM) and Pichon Lalande (99 NM; 98 AG).
