Bollinger La Grande Année 2014
‘A Total Knock-Out’ – Vinous
'I can’t recommend the 2014 highly enough.’ – Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 98/100
Bollinger’s 2014 La Grande Année is so good, it will stop you in your tracks. That’s exactly what happened yesterday when we tasted a bottle in the office – it was an arresting moment. ‘Truly magical’ and ‘one of the best recent editions’, affirms Antonio Galloni.
Owned by the same family since its founding in 1829, Bollinger is undoubtedly one of the best Champagne houses on the planet, and La Grande Année is the jewel in their crown. The 2014 LGA will be more approachable than the 2008 or 2012, but it offers serious competition and the critics are certain of drinking pleasure until 2045!
2014 was a cooler vintage with more Chardonnay than usual in the blend. As a result, this Grande Année has tension and chalkiness in spades, with astounding drive and the airiness of whipped cream. This lightness of being is supported by a precise and elegant palate, a fine mousse, and a satiny texture.
Champagne expert Richard Juhlin calls it ‘one of the vintage’s rare hits’. The Wine Advocate believes this greatness is ‘testimony to the serious viticulture that underpins Bollinger's contemporary excellence’.
