'Given that 80% of Boekenhoutskloof's Syrah now hails from Porseleinberg (the remainder is from Goldmine), it's no surprise that this is such an impressive wine. Fermented with 40% whole bunches, it's subtle, scented and almost delicate, with filigree tannins, rose petal top notes, some clove and nutmeg spice and a hint of oak. 'Now sourced from the Swartland from fruit grown on the famed Porseleinberg vineyard and also the Goldmine farm vineyards next door to the Mullineux’s Roundstone farm. This wine shows lashings of sweet molasses, earthy black berries, tilled earth and smoky salty black liquorice. 'The 2018 Syrah, which includes 40% whole bunch, has a very intense bouquet of macerated dark cherries, boysenberry, mint and light garrigue scents. The palate is medium-bodied with bold tannins and layers of licorice-tinged black fruit. Grippy and firm, this Syrah will require 2–3 years in bottle to soften. Very fine. 'Dark fruit dominates an intense, brooding nose with its black currant, black olive, tar and graphite aromas. Luscious, sweet red and dark berries follow through onto an exceptionally complex palate with rich flavours of ripe plums, black cardamom and hints of ground pepper and sweet tobacco. A serious core of cured meat and green olive tapenade add to the attractive savoury character of the structured mid-palate, with notes of milk chocolate coating the mouth. The wine is supple, medium to full-bodied, with beautiful concentration, silky-textured tannins and vibrant acidity to balance. Producer information Boekenhoutskloof, located in the Franschhoek valley, was established in 1776 and gets its name 'Boekenhout' from an indigenous Beech tree. Boekenhoutskloof, managed by Marc Kent, describes themself as a Syrah specialist. They have various brands within their portfolio including Boekenhoutskloof, The Wolftrap, Porcupine Ridge and The Chocolate Block. Their efforts in conservation can be seen through initiatives they have taken-on in their farm and surrounding areas. They are also a founding member of the Franschhoek Mountain Conservancy.
