Boekenhoutskloof, Syrah 750ml 2017South Africa, Swartland
Boekenhoutskloof, located in the Franschhoek valley, was established in 1776 and gets its name ‘Boekenhout’ from an indigenous Beech tree. Boekenhoutskloof, managed by Marc Kent, describes themself as a Syrah specialist. They have various brands within their portfolio including Boekenhoutskloof, The Wolftrap, Porcupine Ridge and The Chocolate Block. Their efforts in conservation can be seen through initiatives they have taken-on in their farm and surrounding areas. They are also a founding member of the Franschhoek Mountain Conservancy.
'The 2017 Syrah is 35% whole bunch fruit, fermented in concrete and matured for 16 months in 60% new oak. It has a seductive, beautifully defined bouquet, the pure dark cherry, boysenberry and pressed violet aromas wafting from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, astutely judged acidity and lovely cohesion. There is real elegance in this Syrah, and a classic finish. You might well mistake it for the Northern Rhône (Cornas?) if served blind. Superb.' – Neal Martin, Vinous, 94/100
‘Inky purple 2017 balances power & restraint, suppleness & concentration, with pristine blue-black fruit, polished leather & fine integrated oak flavours (ex 2,500L older Austrian foudres) in a sumptuous mouthful. Swartland fruit, spontaneously fermented, 35-40% wholebunch. Like 2016 (4.5 stars, 93 pts), will reward the patient.’ – Platter’s Guide 2020, 5* (95/100)
