'2019 was a tricky vintage in Stellenbosch, but you wouldn’t know it from the quality of this red, made by Pinotage master, Abrie Beeslaar. Intense, structured and serious, with lots of grip, blackberry and red berry flavours, firmish tannins, smoky oak and the concentration and complexity to age in bottle. 2023-30.' – Tim Atkin MW, 2021 SA Report, 95/100

'Concentrated aromas of black cherries, Christmas cake, wild strawberries, plums and cinnamon spice. The nose has that typical Beeslaar perfumed character, with an underlying earthy tone. Beautifully poised and elegant, with fine tannins to support the broad, plush fruit spectrum. The palate is mouthfilling and effortlessly balanced, with lingering savoury notes on the finish.' – Abrie Beeslaar, Winemaker

Notes on the 2018 vintage:
'Abrie Beeslaar sources his Pinotage from sandier soils than the ones he uses to make Kanonkop's Black Label release. The result is a slightly brighter, more scented wine with less weight and concentration but engaging finesse and palate length. Silky and supple, it's a red that shows the Pinot Noir side of the grape's personality, with fine tannins and sweet summer berry flavours. Drink 2022-28.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 96/100

'The nose shows plums and black cherry plus incense, vanilla and spice while the palate is rich and full, relatively smooth in texture but not short of freshness and though it starts sweet, the finish is dry and savoury. For all its intensity, it’s also very well balanced. Price: R565 a bottle.' – Christian Eedes,, 94/100

'There’s plenty of notably sweet flavour, almost jammy richness & density on 2018. 40% new oak, strong tannin structure & powerful 14.5% alcohol gives more blockbuster effect than usual here. 2017 (5 stars, 95 pts) had more finesse & depth of fruit & a drier finish. Also in magnum.' – Platter's Guide, 4.5* (92/100)

Producer information Award-winning winemaker, Abrie Beeslaar, has been the winemaker at Kanonkop since 2002. His love of South Africa’s unique grape variety, Pinotage, led him to establish his own brand, Beeslaar, in 2011. ‘I guess one could argue that I didn’t pick Pinotage – instead, it picked me,’ says Abrie. Beeslaar is a family-run business, producing a single, high-end Pinotage. The grapes are sourced from a 2.5-hectare vineyard of old bush vines in the Simonsberg region and the wine produced is a true expression of its terroir.
