These bargain Burgundy Blancs

start from R375

Chardonnay from Burgundy is behind some of the most expensive and collectible wines in the world. Whilst it might feel like the price rise of the best of Burgundy is never-ending, Wine Cellar has your back with incredible value wines from the classic 2019 vintage. We look to the lesser-known, low-profile, regional appellations and new generations.

Jasper Morris MW, author of Inside Burgundy, thought that there would be a kick-back against the lack of affordable wines. 'What has stopped that has been the rise of beautiful wines made from more lowly appellations.' These two wines are charming, fresh and elegant and offer unbelievable bang for your buck.

At only R375, Joseph Drouhin's 2019 Rully Blanc is a must-have at home. It is fragrant, poised and well-rounded and has consistently been named an Outstanding Top Value pick by Allen Meadows of Burghound. 'To my palate, of all the region's important houses, Drouhin's style places the greatest premium on aromatic range and structural finesse,' says William Kelly of The Wine Advocate.

Olivier Leflaive's 2019 Bourgogne Les Sétilles is another such wine. Its predecessors were served at the royal wedding of Harry and Meghan, and the 2019 is 'exactly what we expect of Bourgogne blanc', writes James Suckling. It has 'the elegance that Puligny-Montrachet is famous for'.

While demand continues to outstrip supply, start looking for alternatives to famous Burgundies. At these prices, you can have both South African and French Chardonnay on the dinner table!
