2016 was a cool and classical vintage in the Barossa Valley, regarded as a standout year. The Signature shows this with floral and savoury aromatics, impressive depth of fruit, a medium to full body, and a brilliant interplay between power and energy. ‘The tannins are very finely managed: granular and precise; almost pixelated,’ says James Halliday.
Josh Raynolds opines that Barossa wines ‘as a rule, age slowly and positively, shedding their overt fruit and baby fat over time and picking up a more savoury character that can sometimes remind one of the northern Rhône’. As we saw with the 2012, these wines have remarkable ageability and get even better with a few years in the cellar.
Since 1962, The Signature has acknowledged more than 57 signatories – the people who have made Yalumba what it is today. The 2016 signatory is dedicated to Chief Winemaker Louisa Rose, ‘a fitting tribute’, notes Decanter.
‘The red wines here deliver a serious payload of intense fruit but rarely, if ever, come off heavy. On the contrary, I have consistently found them to be polished and finely detailed with a highly appealing tannin/fruit interplay.’ – Josh Raynolds, Vinous
