Ashbourne Sandstone 2023 Bottle size: 750ml
South Africa, Hemel-en-Aarde
R375
'Now released as a young wine - it used to have quite a bit of bottle age - Sandstone is a cuvée of Sauvignon Blanc, 22% Chardonnay and 11% Semillon that's fermented in clay amphoras and older barrels. White flower, wet stone and baking spice aromas segue into a palate of citrus, passion fruit and custard underpinned by refreshing minerality. 2025-30' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2024, 93/100
‘The 2023 Sandstone contains 67% Sauvignon Blanc, 22% Chardonnay and 11% Semillon. One Noblot egg was used for fermentation, and it aged in used oak. The nose has attractive purity with lemon rind, orange pith and light leesy aromas. There is good complexity here. The palate is very well-balanced, with a fine, acidic spine. Good tension gently builds in the mouth with a very subtle lemongrass, wild peach-tinged finish lingering in the mouth. This is a very satisfying white blend. 2025-2042’ – Neal Martin, Vinous, 92/100
‘This has a pretty nose of honeysuckle, white peaches, lemons and crushed stones. Touch of fennel. Fresh and creamy, with a medium body and nicely chalky texture. Mineral, saline finish. 67% Sauvignon Blanc, 22% Chardonnay and 11% Sémillon, all grown on sandstone soils.’ – James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, 92/100
