'The 2020 Alvarinho Contacto comes in at 12.6% alcohol, 7.5 grams of total acidity and 1.5 grams of residual sugar. Unlike the Muros Antigos Alvarinho (repeating past advice), this is 100% from Quinta da Torre (located in Monção) and made with a short skin maceration (hence the name Contacto) for 12 hours at 12 degrees Celsius. Mendes has many labels, but this is one that usually has an obvious difference in style. This year it's all about the acidity. There's a touch of green to go with a fair bit of power. That folds in, somewhat, but then it becomes a bit tart. Hours later, it doesn't seem to budge. The concentration is average for the brand but okay. Nervy and tight, though, this is often impressive, if a little hard to read this year. It might show better next spring. There's no rush, as it should age well. It does need to integrate its parts better and become more expressive to earn an uptick in score, but it certainly has some potential for improvement. Vinho Verde is a small region in the north of Portugal and is not only one of Portugal's most famous whites, but also one of the world's top seafood partners. Anselmo Mendes has been producing wine for over 20 years and consults throughout Portugal. He focuses on the Alvarinho, Loureiro and Avesso varieties and is known for his innovation in winemaking.
