Alain Graillot, Crozes-Hermitage 750ml 2016France, Rhône
‘Fans of the traditional style should love the 2016 vintage in the northern Rhône, a far cooler year than 2015.’ – Vinous.com
‘The younger vintage, 2016, has even more buzz. Producers are likening it to the classic 2010, with its powerful fruit but greater emphasis on structure and spine.’ – James Molesworth, Wine Spectator
‘Bright violet. Assertive, spice-accented dark berry, floral pastille and smoky mineral scents show excellent delineation and a hint of olive paste. Sappy and penetrating on the palate, offering energetic boysenberry and black raspberry flavors that deepen and become sweeter with air. Shows a suave interplay of richness and energy and finishes impressively long, with smooth tannins and strong, mineral-driven tenacity. 2022 – 2030.’ – Josh Raynolds, Vinous, 93/100
'A light coating of mocha allows dark cherry and plum compote flavors to glide through center stage while gentle black tea and sandalwood notes fill in on the finish. Alluring. Drink now through 2022.' – Wine Spectator, 92/100
'Completely whole cluster as always, the 2016 Crozes Hermitage comes across as slightly ashy and vegetal, yet it has enough green olive, cola and raspberry notes to possess a sense of balance. It's medium to full-bodied, with a silky mouthfeel and a long finish.' – The Wine Advocate (tasted December 2018), 90/100
About Alain Graillot:
Domaine Alain Graillot is the undisputed king of Crozes-Hermitage. Having consistently produced an honest reflection of the Northern Rhône for 25 years, Alain’s son Maxime Graillot took over from him in 2008. The wines however are still made in an elegant, old-school style. Favouring savouriness and fragrance over oak and sweetness, whole bunch fermentation is key with the Graillot’s organically-farmed, old vine Syrah. Crozes-Hermitage is the largest appellation in the Northern Rhône and stretches from the back end of Hermitage hill over flatter and more sandy soils.
