'Delicate, pure aromas on 2019 lead to a palate with deep, intense fruit & serious tannin-acid structure. The light-feeling loveliness & thrilling charm belie a potential for long development. Only old oak, like all these. 14% alcohol. Last tasted was 2016 (4.5 stars, 90 pts).' – Platter's Guide, 5* (95/100)

'A wonderfully exotic, perfumed wine that is supposed to come from the oldest Grenache vineyard in South Africa planted in the 1950s. There is a lovely creamy, savoury, earthy red berry intensity with super polished tannins, an incredibly finessed palate texture and a long, bramble berry, cranberry and rose hip finish. This 2019 shows some of the most harmonious elegance I’ve seen on any of Adi’s reds and really is a true hommage to this ancient vineyard. Bravo!' – Greg Sherwood MW, 95/100

'The 2019 Raaigras, pure Grenache including 15% stems, has a vibrant bouquet of red cherry and strawberry scents, demonstrating a little more presence than Badenhorst’s other reds. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, crisp red berry fruit and a liberal sprinkling of white pepper. The whole bunch addition lends more presence and density compared to other cuvées from Badenhorst, and there is superb length. The standout this year. Drink 2022-2034.' – Neal Martin, Vinous, 94/100 (Apr 2021)

'Adi Badenhorst reckons this 1951 Grenache block is the oldest in South Africa, and who am I to argue with him? Fans of the Gredos mountain reds from Spain will love this dense, sappy, red-fruited style, with a nip of tannin, very little wood influence and a racy finish. Drink 2022-27.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 94/100

Producer information AA Badenhorst Family Wines are grown, made and matured on Kalmoesfontein farm in the Swartland appellation of South Africa. The farm is owned by cousins, Hein and Adi Badenhorst, and over the last decade, 41 hectares of old vines, the oldest planted back in 1952, have been farmed back to glory. They practice biological farming and make natural wines in the traditional manner. 'The top wines translate Swartland through Adi's fuzzy logic and irresistible charm,' writes Neal Martin after a visit. He also calls his visit one of his 'top 10 wine visits of all time'.
