'"Big vines" is how Adi Badenhorst describes the fruit of this Swartland vineyard, planted in 1968 and 1972. The result is a wonderfully complex, self-assured Chenin Blanc with hay and wild flower aromas, a hint of gunflint, pear and quince flavours, stylish wood and enough focus and minerality to carry full malolactic fermentation. Long and detailed. 2022-28.' – Tim Atkin MW, 2021 SA Report, 96/100

'Yellow peach, pineapple and a little leesy complexity on the nose. Relatively rich on the palate – slightly greasy in texture with layers of flavour, the finish long and savoury.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 93/100

'The juice always takes a long time to ferment and the resulting wine has a wonderful minerality to it. Obviously textured and deep in flavour because of the low yields and age of the vines. It has a complex flinty aromatic profile and we reckon it can age pretty well.' – Adi Badenhorst, Winemaker

Producer information AA Badenhorst Family Wines are grown, made and matured on Kalmoesfontein farm in the Swartland appellation of South Africa. The farm is owned by cousins, Hein and Adi Badenhorst, and over the last decade, 41 hectares of old vines, the oldest planted back in 1952, have been farmed back to glory. They practice biological farming and make natural wines in the traditional manner. 'The top wines translate Swartland through Adi's fuzzy logic and irresistible charm,' writes Neal Martin after a visit. He also calls his visit one of his 'top 10 wine visits of all time'.
