AA Badenhorst Family Wines are grown, made and matured on Kalmoesfontein farm in the Swartland appellation of South Africa. The 28ha of old bushvines grow in the Siebritskloof part of the Paardeberg mountain.

The property is owned by the dynamic and good looking cousins Hein and Adi Badenhorst. They are originally from Constantia. Their grandfather was the farm manager of Groot Constantia for 46 years. Their fathers were born there and farmed together in Constantia, during the days when people still ate fresh vegetables and Hanepoot grapes, drank Cinsault and there were a lot less traffic lights and hippies still had a presence. Together these two have restored a neglected cellar on the farm that was last used in the 1930′s to make natural wines in the traditional manner.

The current vintage has yet to be tasted, the tasting notes below are from the previous vintage:
'Magical concoction of 10 varieties, old/large oak fermented. Chenin-led starts tight & focused, then expands into citrus & stonefruit with creamy almond hints. Pith, peel & peach stone bite add grip, suggesting time will reward anyone who can resist drinking it right away. Only 9 varieties in 14! – Platter's Wine Guide 2018, 5*

'Blending no fewer than ten white grapes (Chenin is the largest component with 20%), this wine owes as much to the Jura as it does to the Cape, with notes of flor and umami, yeasty weight and complex, saline, herbal notes underpinned by acidity. 2017-20'. – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2017, 93/100

The end result is compelling. Aromatics of citrus and peach plus flowers, dried herbs and gravel road dustiness while the palate has a great purity about it without being overtly fruity – it comes across as very deftly made with none of those components there by accident. Nothing too easy about it – in fact, it’s quite formidable right now – very tight and savoury – but should mature with benefit.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 94/100
