'Dassiekop was the first single vineyard Chenin Blanc from Adi Badenhorst, taking its first bow in 2011. Located at 350 metres and surrounded by aromatic fynbos, this is a classic expression of granite soils: concentrated, dense and focused, all pear, wax and lanolin with mouth-watering freshness and length. Drink 2022-27.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 95/100

'One of a remarkable range of single vineyard chenins that speak of soil & slope. This 2019, from minuscule yield, amongst the most outgoing & generously fruited, but with herbal lift & a succulent, almost lemony edge. All these ‘19 chenins a little less alcohol than previous vintage; this 14% - 0.5% down on 2018 (5 stars, 96 pts).' – Platter's Guide, 4.5* (94/100)

'The 2019 Dassiekop Steen hesitates to coalesce in the glass, eventually revealing dried honey, melted wax and a scent that reminds me of a brass doorknocker! The palate is well balanced with fine definition and crisp acidity. Suggestions of toffee apple and mango commingle with attractive saline/sea spray notes toward the finish. Very fine, but my advice is to afford this an hour’s decanting.' – Neal Martin, Vinous, 92/100 (Apr 2021)

'For me the this is the finest Chenin Blanc or Steen vineyard and site in the Swartland. The rare combination of the perfect match between site, varietal and age of vines is truly expressed in this wine. Exceptional mouthfeel, texture, freshness, and concentration of fruit is the norm from this site. This wine is not released annually.' – Adi Badenhorst, Winemaker

Producer information AA Badenhorst Family Wines are grown, made and matured on Kalmoesfontein farm in the Swartland appellation of South Africa. The farm is owned by cousins, Hein and Adi Badenhorst, and over the last decade, 41 hectares of old vines, the oldest planted back in 1952, have been farmed back to glory. They practice biological farming and make natural wines in the traditional manner. 'The top wines translate Swartland through Adi's fuzzy logic and irresistible charm,' writes Neal Martin after a visit. He also calls his visit one of his 'top 10 wine visits of all time'.
