Platter's 5-star winners revealed
The 2023 scores in SA's bestselling wine guide have just been released on Platter's digital platforms! We’d like to congratulate all the producers on this wonderful achievement. For the fifth time, Mullineux has been named Winery of the year, whilst Savage Wines was chosen as the Editor’s Producer of the Year. Most of the 5-star wines sell out on release, but we do have some gems still available.
The 2023 edition sees 5 stars awarded to 196 wines from a selection of over 8,000. Chenin Blanc has made a remarkable leap in terms of quality in recent years, and it joins Red Blends as the best performing category with 28 five-star ratings. This list includes our last stock of Alheit, David and Nadia, and Mullineux.
Chardonnay, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon were also notable performers this year. Le Riche Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2019 was named Best in Class, with Kanonkop, Restless River and Stark-Condé notable inclusions. Hamilton Russell’s 2021 is the Chardonnay of the Year. For Syrah, look no further than Mullineux’s great single-terroir expressions.
‘South Africa continues to impress wine-lovers and -collectors around the world with its outstanding quality, along with diversity, character and interest,’ comments Philip van Zyl, Editor of Platter's. There are many more spectacular wines from the likes of Hannes Storm, Donovan Rall and Abrie Beeslaar, so snap up Kanonkop Black Label Pinotage 2020, Klein Constantia Vin de Constance 2018, Kruger Old Vine Grenache 2020, and Momento Grenache 2020 – all of which exemplify the incredible diversity of SA’s fine wine offering.
The 2023 guide results are available now on Platter’s digital platforms – the apps for iOS/Apple and Android, and their website. The bestselling and collectible hardcover version of the new edition will be released towards the end of November.
