Young Guns ™ – At Heart
About Young Guns – At Heart
Since 2011, Wine Cellar has been scouring the vineyards to unearth the young winemaking talent that will be producing tomorrow’s greatest wines. But not every year do we find a hot new bunch that has thrown out the textbooks and is pushing the boundaries. So in 2018, we’re taking a trip through SA’s modern winemaking history and bringing you the BEST personalities in the wine industry. These are Young Guns – At Heart.
Billed to be the wine show of the year, we are hosting 6 legendary winemakers that were Young Guns decades ago and have continued unabated. Join us for an evening of fine wine, music, laughter and fun as these larger-than-life, top-class producers share their winemaking journeys and discuss how the wine scene has exploded over the last decade. Warning – not for sensitive viewers!
The Class of 2018
First up, we have Pieter Walser of BLANKbottle, who is really the ultimate Young Gun and produces up to 50 different wines each year, all with unique labels and stories. Then Niels Verburg of Luddite who gained international success with his big ideas and big wines from the backwaters of Botriver. Then Duncan Savage who is now making incredibly successful wines from his new urban winery in Salt River, Cape Town. And then, of course, Adi Badenhorst of Badenhorst Family Wines whose vision, creative persona and heritage seem to transcend fine wine.
What about David Niewoudt of Cederberg who’s produced fine wines for 2 decades high up in the Cederberg – the most remote wine region in SA? But there’s no doubt that the highlight of the evening will be the legend of legends, Mr Pinotage himself, Beyers Truter of Beyerskloof. Oom Beyers is certainly young at heart. He works as hard as ever, even making wine in Ethiopia, and continues to promote Pinotage as our national heritage.
