Notes

Tasting notes:
'This is the first vintage of Yalumba’s new Cabernet/Shiraz-based flagship wine. Deep garnet in color, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon / Shiraz The Caley offers expressive baked blackberries, cherry cordial and blackcurrant jelly notes with suggestions of Chinese five spice, cedar and anise. The palate is built like a brick house, delivering a solid structure of firm, grainy tannins and plenty of freshness to support and complement the voluptuous, full-bodied flesh. It offers a very long, layered finish with lingering exotic spice and black berry preserves notes. Give it 3-5 more years in bottle and drink it over the next twenty-five.' – Wine Advocate 96+/100

Winemaker's comments:
'At Yalumba when we launch a wine...it is all about the wine. It is not something accountants dream up or marketers create. On May 12, 2017 Yalumba will release The Caley, a landmark Cabernet Sauvignon & Shiraz that has been 168 years in the making. The Caley is the pinnacle of a long winemaking journey seeking excellence – a Super Claret that rightfully honours one of Yalumba’s most adventurous sons.

Named in honour of Fred Caley Smith, grandson of Yalumba founder Samuel Smith, and my great uncle. Fred was a horticulturist who had a profound impact on the development of Yalumba’s orchards and vineyards. He is best remembered for a ground-breaking research journey he undertook in 1893 and 1894 to the USA, UK, Europe, the Middle East, Sri Lanka and India.

The 29 year-old’s detailed and poignant letters to his father, sent home every few days were collected and kept in the Yalumba archive. Over subsequent generations they have provided inspiration and encouragement for the winery’s outward looking international handshake. On February 15 & 16 we hosted a close group of friends and media at the winery for a special preview. We politely asked that they kept the details of this wine under wraps until now! After all the planning and thinking, grape growing and winemaking and patient cellaring, we’d like to think that this wine will come to symbolise both our persistence and our track record of innovation as a company. The Caley is a symbol of that arrival at a point where we can put our hand on our heart and say this is truly a rare, luxurious wine, and then move on.' – Robert Hill-Smith, Yalumba Winemaker

Yalumba was founded in 1849 and five generations later is now Australia’s oldest family owned winery. Yalumba is the aboriginal word for 'all the land around'. Yalumba’s wines are characterised by elegance and tradition. Often more medium bodied, they are fresh and vibrant, showing an honesty that is breed throughout the company into the wines they produce. Categorised A 5 Star winery by James Halliday and is a ‘Member of Australia's First Families of Wine’.
