Wolf & Woman, Chenin Blanc 2018

Notes

Jolandie Fouché, winemaker at Kloovenburg in the Swartland, now has her own label called Woman and Wolf.

Tasting notes:
'Grapes equally from a 1980 Paardeberg vineyard planted on granite and a 1983 vineyard outside Malmesburg planted on iron. A forthcoming and compelling nose of naartjie, peach and dried herbs. The palate has lovely fruit expression and weight with nicely integrated, tangy acidity, the finish savoury to the point of bitter. The two different batches of fruit seem to complement each other very well, the end result having an effortlessness about it while also being true to the Swartland.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 94/100

Winemakers notes:
'This Chenin is a 50/50 blend of two old vineyards, one 35-years old and the other 38-years old. The 38-year old block is in the Paardeberg and is found in granite soils, whilst the 35-year old block is grown in iron-rich soil. The winemaker specifically chose these two blocks for the balance and concentration found in them. The granite block gives the freshness, whilst the iron soil allows for it to be fuller and riper. The gapes were whole-bunch pressed, with no additions into old 300L barrels for spontaneous fermentation. Kept on barrel for 10months before bottling - alc 13,5% ' – Winemaker
