Notes
As January is one of our hottest months, the Wine Cellar Insiders January pack focuses on light reds. Served slightly chilled, these are great for lunchtime drinking or during a balmy evening. The alcohols are generally lower, they are more refreshing and they tend to be drier on the finish. This makes them easy to drink in volume. They also tend to be made very naturally too, which is good for everyone.
Chavy Chouet, Bourgogne Pinot Noir la Taupe 2015 – R 365
‘This red Burgundy is made by Romaric Chavy, who was just 20 years old when he took over his family property back in 2006. Pure raspberry and cherry fruit overlay a savoury complexity and an underlying grip. Mineral and taught, the finish is long and poised.’ – Roland Peens
Patatsfontein, Patatsblanc 2016 – R 150
'Using fruit from the same vineyard as Patatsfontein (on Karoo slate soils at 560 metres), this is a blend of Colombard with 16% Chenin Blanc. Exotic and rich, it has nectarine and white peach flavours and a leesy texture underpinned by acidity and a touch of old wood.’ – Tim Atkin, Special South Africa Report 2017
Vriesenhof, Unwooded Chardonnay 2017 – R 100
'Unwooded Chardonnays in South Africa can be rather boring, simple and fruity. Not the Vriesenhof though! It was picked early and shows beautiful aromatics, granny smith apples and of course those teasing mineral nuances.' – Roland Peens
The Blacksmith, Hell Yeah Pinotage 2017 – R 165
'An absolutely delicious drop! Crunchy and bright fruited with lively acidity and a dry, fresh finish. Best served slightly chilled.' – James Pietersen
Van Loggerenburg, Break a Leg Blanc de Noir – R 140
‘A Blanc de Noir from Paarl Cinsaut. Matured for nine months in old oak. Pale copper in colour, this is all about delicacy and understatement. On the nose, subtle notes of citrus, red apple and wild strawberry plus hints of herbs and spice. The palate is extraordinarily light and fresh with a bone-dry finish making for a very refreshing glass of wine.’ – Christian Eedes
Trizanne Signature Wines, TSW Shiraz 2015 – R 110
‘What was the Syrah Grenache is labelled as a straight Syrah from the 2015 vintage, the wine still containing some Grenache but this down to 15% from 20% of the blend and therefore Barnard not obliged to declare it. From Swartland fruit, the wine shows more black fruit than in the past plus black olive, earth and a hint of spice. Nice fruit expression, smooth textured in a good sense, this remains a wonderfully accessible drop.’ – Christian Eedes
