The Jem is an expression of the Helderberg - Stellenbosch terroir. The wine has been grown and crafted to show a combination of fruit and spice on aroma with elegantly layered tannins to enhance the flavour and finish.

Waterford Estate released their flagship red wine, The Jem, in October 2007. Waterford’s ambition has always been to make the best possible red wine from their home grown vineyards, a wine that expresses Waterford’s ethos of uncompromising quality. This wine has been ten years in the making, and is dedicated to, and named after, Jeremy Ord, the proprietor of Waterford Estate, who is fondly known as Jem to his friends and family.

Viticulture:
Great winter with sufficiently cold and wet conditions. Spring brought moderate warmth initiating good even growth but late cultivars such as Cabernet Sauvignon received rain during flowering causing bad fruit set resulting in a 45% lower crop. Reds wines stood out in the vintage as being expressive and classical with lower alcohols.

Tasting notes:
'Cabernet Sauvignon accounts for 42% of this unique, top-end cuvée, with seven other French and Italian varieties completing the blend. One of the best Jems yet, it’s elegant and floral, focused and poised, with seamless integration of the many components. Asian spices, fine- grained tannins and refreshing acidity are brilliantly combined. Drink: 2017-24'. – Tim Atkin MW, 95/100

'A blend of 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Shiraz, 14% Merlot, 11% Cabernet franc, 4% Mourvèdre, 3% Petit Verdot, 3% Barbera and 3% Sangiovese, it spent 19 months in French oak, 28% new. It’s got a wonderfully complex nose of red and black fruit, sea breeze, herbs, spice and earth. The palate is rich but balanced – dense fruit, fresh acidity, the finish long and savoury. Powerful in the best sense, this seems immensely age-worthy'. – Christian Eedes, Winemag, 94/100

'Flagship from estate's 11 black grapes - Italian, Spanish & French - most planted since 1999; dark brooding 12 (5*) packed with juicy berry fruit & savoury spice, 30% new oak in harmonious support. Rich, lithe & deeply alluring, a wine for the long haul, like 11 & previous'. – Platters Guide 2018, 5*

'A wine which encompasses our entire philosophy at Waterford Estate, the true reflection of the diversity and fruit on our property. Intriguing aromatics of fresh fruit, wild spice, warmth and complexity complimented by the well layered and integrated tannins to offer an elegant yet long lasting finish that is classically dry and rewarding'. – Wine Maker
