Notes

Tempranillo (75%), Garnacho (15%), Graciano and Mazuelo (10%), all from their own vineyards.

Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta founded Viña Tondonia in the years 1913-14. Tondonia was to become the bodega’s most famous vineyard and product. Viña Tondonia is a beautiful vineyard of over 100 hectares, situated on the right bank of the river Ebro, where the most typical Rioja wines are grown. Apart from Tondonia, López de Heredia owns three more vineyards also set in the Rioja Alta region. These are the "Viña Cubillo", "Viña Bosconia" and "Viña Zaconia". These vineyards are planted to ensure that maximum quality starts in the vines themselves, forming the basis of the reputation of Lopez Heredia.

‘The 2004 Viña Tondonia Reserva…is a worthy follower of the 2001, the greatest of the Viña Tondonia Reservas of recent times. It has the usual blend and usual levels of alcohol and acidity, bottled after six years in oak barrels. The nose feels savory (if that's possible–umami?) and developed, with tertiary aromas and good balance between spices, leathery notes, cherries and balsamic notes of cigar box and incense. The palate is both round and crisp, with refined tannins. It has very good balance with subtle acidity and very good persistence. 260,000 bottles produced.’ – Wine Advocate 94/100

Classified by The Regulating Council as ‘Excellent’. This year we were producing from 157 ha of the 170 owned by us in our 4 vineyards. We harvested a total of 890.475 kg of grapes. The absence of spring frost joined to the good environmental conditions that helped the fertilization fought against the difficult moments that we passed during the budding, delayed by the low temperatures during that period. All this weather conditions end up into a good and high yield harvest. The summer time was unstable with high risk of storms but Autumn was fresh and full of light and this weather allowed us to obtain very high quality grapes. The harvest took place very slowly and so that we could choose to pick the grapes in the perfect maturation moment. The Harvest started on Viña Tondonia

Ageing period in barrels:
6 years, racked twice a year and fined with fresh egg whites.
