Ridiculous value from Barolo and Barbaresco

Barolo and Barbaresco offer unbelievable aromatics and finesse with a delicacy akin to Pinot Noir but with riper and richer tannins. They develop ‘the most extraordinarily haunting bouquet… of roses, autumn undergrowth, woodsmoke, violets and tar’ writes Jancis Robinson. Frankly, these two offer ridiculous value compared to the likes of Burgundy, Bordeaux and even Tuscany.

Few grapes offer the character, depth and age-ability of Nebbiolo grown in Piedmont. Arguably more difficult to master than Pinot Noir, Nebbiolo is at home in the north-western corner of Italy where the Alps meet the Mediterranean sea.

Value Marengo Barolo and Produttori del Barbaresco from Piedmont

The small family producer M. Marengo, in the town of La Morra, has produced a beauty in the cooler 2014 vintage. The 2014 Marengo Barolo is classically styled, mineral, perfumed and ‘similar to the 1996’ says Marco. On Wine Advocate, it is described as a ‘solid expression of Nebbiolo with delicate, almost Burgundian lines’. We have been importing Marengo wines for 10 years and know that it will age well for 2 decades.

In contrast, the Produttori del Barbaresco, from the other side of Alba, heralds from the warm 2015 vintage. Often regarded as one of the world’s greatest co-operatives, their traditional and honest style is slightly more exotic and plush. The 2015 Barbaresco will offer immense joy in its youth but, it too will age for a decade or more.

Piedmont continues to rise in the world of wine and should feature in all fine wine collections. Browse our full selection of Piedmont wines.
