Notes

75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc

'After tasting through hundreds of Bordeauxs on a recent buying trip, we came across an excellent parcel of maturing St-Émilion at a super price.

Dating back to 1802, Château Trimoulet is a small, relatively unknown property in St-Émilion Grand Cru owned by the Jean family. Importantly, the high-flying consultant Nicolas Thienpont, who is also the producer and owner of Pavie-Macquin and Beausejour, produced the 2011 Trimoulet and there was a marked upswing in quality. Merlot dominates the Bordeaux Right Bank but it offers different expressions depending on the soil type and terroir. Trimoulet is located in the northern part of St-Émilion where the soils are slightly lighter with silty clay and gravel.

This is a medium-bodied Bordeaux, made in a traditional style, from what would be regarded as a classic vintage on the Right Bank. A blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc, it offers typical ‘Bordeaux pong’ or sous bois character, meaning ‘forest floor’, with mineral notes and fine aromatics. The palate is beautifully balanced by savoury notes and sweet red fruits.

Although ready to drink now, it has finely-structured tannins that should allow for another decade of ageing. This is classy Bordeaux at an affordable price.' – Roland Peens

Tasting notes:
'A blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc, this property used to taste like a Bordeaux version of Beaujolais (25 years ago). However, that is no longer the case. The deep ruby/purple-colored 2011 Trimoulet exhibits good fruit as well as white chocolate and berry-scented notes intermixed with licorice, oak and spice. This is a well-made offering from a property that appears to be making a comeback. Enjoy it over the next 5-7 years.' – Wine Advocate, 87/100
