Rocking Horse and Wanderer’s Heart 2018 offer super value

The newly-released 2018 Thorne and Daughters Rocking Horse Cape White and Wanderer’s Heart offer immense value, especially when considering the prices of other signature blends. These finely crafted 2018s highlight John Seccombe’s astute fine wine vision and are awesome at this price point.

Working with various heritage vineyards, the 2018 Rocking Horse Cape White is a multi-vineyard, multi-varietal blend that takes its aesthetic from white Burgundy rather than Rhône – John prefers refinement over weight. The 2018 is a stunning wine with poised aromas and a deliciously dry and savoury palate. It really attests to John's attentive winemaking.

The Rhône-style 2018 Wanderer’s Heart is the red partner to the white above and offers similar value. While it has a little more weight than previous releases, there is no loss of freshness and it offers both drinkability and complexity with fine, detailed tannins. A delicious and refined red.

Thorne and Daughters 2018s

Due to the Swartland being ‘in the teeth of the drought’ as John puts it, the unique 2018 single-vineyard bottlings are only available in super small quantities. The 2018 Cat’s Cradle Chenin Blanc, which is especially limited, is concentrated and dense on the palate with a lean backbone. For followers of the Paper Kite Old Vine Sémillon, the 2018 will need some time for its texture and palate weight to meld.

The absolute stand-out is the 2018 Tin Soldier Sémillon. This skin-contact, unfiltered, unfined, raised-in-old-oak gem is so complex that almost every sip changes in the glass. It is a fascinating and intriguing wine in the best possible way. Get some!
