Notes

Inspired and named after the Duwweltjies (Tribulusterrestris – Devils thorns) growing in the vineyard that cling to the soles of your shoes—reminders of paths travelled and those yet to be explored. This Chenin blanc is sourced from a heritage bush vine vineyard, planted in 1956, on the northwestern tip of the Muldersvlei bowl in Paarl.

This vineyard has its own rhythm and, while picking the duwweltjies from their soles, they have learnt it's a pretty slow beat.

Tasting notes:
'The newly released 2018 (matured for 10 months in older oak, alcohol: 13%) has an extraordinarily expressive nose – naartjie and orange, peach and apricot, some waxiness, some nuttiness and a touch of spice. The palate is super-concentrated and super-flavourful. Sweet upfront but suitably savoury on the finish, tangy acidity lending drive. It’s a dramatic wine, perhaps a touch more rustic than the sublime 2017, but quite delicious even so.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 94/100

Winemaker's comments:
Duwweltjie Chenin blanc is sourced from an old, gnarly, bush vine vineyard on the northwestern tip of the Muldersvlei bowl. The vineyard was planted by horse and plough over 65 years ago. The small shards of koffieklip (ferricrete) on the soil surface pay testament to what lies under the light textured colluvium (transported topsoil).

The winemaking is kept simple and true – whole bunch pressed, only the free run juice was used for natural fermentation in 3rd fill French oak barrels. The lees was stirred (battonage) for the first month, after which the wine was allowed to mature on the lees for 10 months prior to bottling (unfiltered). Only 6 barrels were made. Pairs well with family, friends and any occasion around the dining table.
