Notes

Duwweltjie Chenin blanc is sourced from an old, gnarly, bush vine vineyard on the north western tip of the Muldersvlei bowl. The vineyard was planted by horse and plough over 65 years ago. The small shards of koffieklip (ferricrete) on the soil surface pay testament to what lies under the light textured colluvium (transported topsoil).

This vineyard has its own rhythm and, while picking the duwweltjies from their soles, they have learnt it's a pretty slow beat.

The winemaking is kept simple and true — whole bunch pressed, only the free run juice was used for natural fermentation in 3rd fill French oak barrels. The lees was stirred (battonage) for the first month, after which the wine was allowed to mature on the lees for 8 months prior to bottling (unfiltered). Pairs well with family, friends and any occasion around the dining table.

Winemaker's comments:
We only made 6 barrels of Duwweltjie in 2017 as we made sure to only select the best barrels which truly express the terroir of this old vine vineyard (planted in 1956), and of course the five stars in our pocket was weighing heavily when we made the barrel selection so we were super strict – quality over volume! We saw last year that a little bit of time in the bottle made a huge difference to the Duwweltjie’s flavour which is why we’ve kept it back just a few months longer to mature in the bottle.

The 2016 vintage is the latest vintage to be tasted, and its tasting notes are below:
'After working harvests around the world, Stephanie Wiid and Etienne Terblanche have established the Thistle & Weed label locally, their first release being Duwweltjie Chenin Blanc 2016. Grapes from a Muldersvlei vineyard over 65 years old, winemaking involved spontaneous fermentation in third-fill barrels before six months of maturation. The result is a wonderfully subtle and intricate wine. The nose shows citrus, peach and pineapple as well as a hint of earthiness and some yeasty complexity. The palate is light but flavourful – great fruit definition, the acidity particularly lively, the finish long and pithy.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za 93/100

Analysis:
Alc: 13% pH: 3.37 TA: 5.6 g/L RS: 1.9 g/L
