Notes

With a decade and a half of experience in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley (previously as winemaker at Hamilton Russell Vineyards), Hannes Storm aims to produce the finest Pinot Noir possible by focusing on the best suited sites for this challenging variety. If you have not tried these, you are missing out on South Africa’s benchmark Pinot Noirs! With a tiny 2019 harvest in the barrels long before last week’s 75 mm of rain, we are proud to announce the release of the three much-anticipated 2017 Storm Pinot Noirs along with an opulent, classically styled Vrede Chardonnay 2018.

Ridge Pinot Noir hails from a cool, eastern slope in the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge with low-vigour, stony, clay-rich Bokkeveld shale soils.

This basket pressed, native yeast fermented wine shows great balance and length from the natural acidity. Vibrant, rich and generous with black cherry, floral and spicy notes, with underlying silky tannins.

Tasting notes:
'Ridge comes, obviously enough, from the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge and is made with the youngest vines in the Storm portfolio. Grown at 330 metres of Bokkeveld shale, it’s spicy and refreshing, showing pomegranate and red berry fruit and some underlying grip. 2020-25' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2018, 94/100

Viticulture:
After a particularly early 2016 vintage, the 2017 vintage was more in line with the normal timing that we are used to in the Hemel-en-Aarde, harvest starting only slightly earlier than our long-time average. A warm December, a cool January and a warmer February, coupled with cool nights, were beneficial during the ripening stages. These conditions afforded good colour and flavour development while preserving acidity. 2017 was an excellent vintage for us – perhaps a favourite – with poise and elegance and layered concentration showcasing its sense of place.
