Stellenbosch Cabernet 2017 en-primeur

Wine Cellar offered the very first Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignons en-primeur with the 2015 vintage. As they have hit the market there has been a strong realisation that it's the greatest modern-day Cape vintage ever. Until we tasted the 2017s at least…

'Fine, ripe tannins with pure, expressive fruit, freshness and length.' – Christo Le Riche on 2017

'The wines showed remarkably well, with superb structures and surprising balance given their youth, thanks to vibrant, assertive and ripe fruit profiles.' – Lauren Buzzeo, Wine Enthusiast

On average the 2015 en-primeurs realised a 9,96% annualised saving on their release prices. With more experience, and by targeting only the top wines, we believe 2017 will save you up to 15% per annum until release! The category as a whole is burgeoning, with high demand for quality grapes and retail prices well below global benchmarks. There are also a number of top-flight producers that are set for price adjustments. Thelema and Alto are specifically under-priced against a R395 average, while Kanonkop, Neil Ellis, Waterford, Rustenberg and Le Riche lead the industry in quality and brand equity and yet not price. Kleine Zalze was the highest-rated Cabernet Sauvignon on average by the two media houses.

2017 was the 3rd drought vintage in a row and is possibly more concentrated than the fine 2015s. Quality is similarly consistent across the board it will be fascinating to pair these vintages side by side in decades to come. Read more on the vintage by Wine Enthusiast and Winemag.co.za.

P.S. The 2016s are generally earlier drinking in style and less consistent in quality. We deemed it not worthwhile for an en-primeur campaign.
