Sierra Cantabria - Rioja
|
 The Eguren family have been
making wine in San Vicente de la Sonsierra since 1870. Sierra Cantabria, the
spearhead winery of the Egurens, produces traditional but classy
Riojan wines that often have a percentage of American oak maturation. The
well-crafted range begins with the great value Cosecha through to
the single vineyard super-cuvee's such as the Amancio and Finca El
Bosque. Vinedos de Pagenos is an Eguren project sourcing old vine
parcels in Rioja and La Nieta is fast becoming one of Spain's most
sought-after wines. San Vicente, another project of
the Egurens, is perched on top of Sonsierra and comprises
of a single vineyard the Reserva style.

The 2006
Collecion Privada was sourced from some of the estate's
oldest Tempranillo vines. Malolactic fermentation was in barrel
and the wine was aged for 18 months in new French and American
oak. It gives up an alluring bouquet of pain grille, liquid
mineral, lavender, incense, and blackberry. On the palate it is
layered, medium to full-bodied, ripe, and complex. Give this
lengthy effort 3-4 years of additional cellaring and drink it
from 2013 to 2026. WA 92/100
The 2006 Finca El Bosque is sourced
entirely from a Tempranillo vineyard of that name. It went
through malolactic fermentation in barrel and was aged for 18
months in 100% new, predominantly French oak. Opaque purple in
color, it has a compelling nose of smoky new oak, graphite,
scorched earth, violets, cinnamon, clove, and blackberry.
Opulent on the palate, it is super-rich, loaded with savory
flavor, and already complex. Approachable now, it will benefit
from 3-5 years of cellaring and have a drinking window extending
from 2014 to 2031. WA 94/100
The 2005 Amancio is a single vineyard
planted to 100% Tempranillo. Both alcoholic and malolactic
fermentation were in barrel and the wine was aged for 24 months
in new barriques. Opaque purple-colored, it offers a soaring
aromatic array of toasty new oak, crushed stone, roasted herbs,
lavender, leather, black currant, and blackberry. Voluptuous,
layered, and surprisingly forward, it can be enjoyed now with
decanting but will evolve for a decade. Suave, sweet, and very
long, it will provide a drinking window extending from 2013 to
2030. - WA 96/100

vineyard of the same name planted in 1975. Malolactic
fermentation was sur lie in new French oak for four
months followed by 18 months in new French barriques.
Purple/black-colored with a brooding nose of great
promise, it shows off notes of new oak, crushed stone,
scorched earth, roasted herbs, incense, and blackberry.
Voluminous yet elegant on the palate, it is
mouth-filling and rich with gobs of fruit and plenty of
ripe tannin. Give this lengthy effort 6-8 years of
cellaring and drink it from 2016 to 2030.
The 2006 La Nieta (the
granddaughter) is 100% Tempranillo from Finca La Nieta,
planted in 1975. Malolactic fermentation was in new
French barriques followed by 18 months in new French
oak. Purple in color, it delivers a fragrant, alluring

blueberry, and blackberry. Opulent, dense, and layered,
this promising wine has tons of fruit, soft tannin, and
superb length. It will benefit from 6-8 years of

Numanthia Termes - Toro
Originally started by Marcus
Eguren of Sierra Cantabria, Numanthia Winery is the most famed
winey in Toro
along the Douro River. The vines of Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo
Clone) are between 70 and 140 year old which produce extremely
concentrated yet elegant and finely tannined wines. The
Termanthia rises from 100+ year old vines and the 2004 was a
Parker 100/100! “This red is so thick and rich it's almost
oily in texture, with exotic flavors of black fruit, game, dried
herb and hoisin. Muscular tannins keep this structured, but give
way to floral and graphite notes on the finish. A powerful wine
with modern structure and distinctive character. Best from 2011
through 2020. 530 cases made. –TM” - WS. Please
enquire about being placed onto the allocation list.

Teso La Monja - Toro
Whilst Marcus Eguren was
achieving huge success with Numanthia, and inevitably selling it
off to LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy), he started an
adjacent project within Toro – Teso La Monja. Made similarly
with old vines in the arid, dry sandy soil, these are set to
achieve similar cult status. As yet unrated.
Alabaster 2007 - A 100% Tinta de
Toro from pre-phylloxera vines that yielded a mere 10 hl/ha that
is aged in new french
oak barrels for 16
months. The result of the late 2007 harvest, this has clearly
benefited from the 2007 summer's
cool nights, this is
aromatic, powerful yet elegant exhibiting ripe lush flavours,
brimming with crushed victoria plum
and violet character,
notes of mineral and morello cherry, bolstered by svelte,
alluring tannins. Sublime.
Victorino 2007 - The Victorino is
the result of 15hl/ha from some of the estate's oldest vines
(nothing below 45 years old)
ageing will be in new
french oak for 15 months. This intense, multi-layered Toro,
meaty yet slick, polished tannins,
notes of blueberry,
tayberry, hints of bitter sweet dark chocolate, spice and
mineral. Superb.

La
Bascula - Jumilla
The partnership between South
African Bruce Jack and Ed Adams MW from the UK produces great
value wines.
Decanter Magazine February 2009 named
the Turret Fields as one of the 50 best value reds in the world
"The kind of big red the word “gutsy” was
designed for… adds seasoning to bold, spicy foods." The
Charge is an oak-driven typical Riojan beauty with Viura giving
spice and texture.
