We give to you: Ryan Mostert. Self-professed wine geek. Jamet Junkie. Arguably one of the most passionate vignerons brought forth from Southern African soils.

Whilst staying true to his philosophy of innovation and experimentation in the cellar, and utter dedication in the vineyard, this year’s Smiley Chenin Blanc V4.0 NV, Smiley Red V3.0 NV as well as the Silwervis Chenin Blanc 2016 and Silwervis Cinsault 2016 have taken an elegant turn. The wines are more precise and focused, whilst retaining their fantastical and idiosyncratic nature.

As ever, the Smileys are excellent value for money. Whilst the Smiley Chenin Blanc V4.0 NV remains a journey of Jura white, it has a beautiful fruit purity and salinity with ‘less obvious winemaking’ as Ryan explained.

Winemakers notes:
The Smiley NV Chenin Blanc V4 is our fourth release of our multi-vintage Chenin Blend. Wines for this version were selected from four different vintages spanning 2015-2018. The wine is made from fruit sourced from multiple parcels on the granitic Paardeberg terroirs of the Swartland. The wines are all naturally fermented with nothing added. Fermentation takes place in a combination of seasoned oak barrels and stainless steel tank. The wine is matured in a combination of seasoned oak, stainless steel and glass demijohn.

Post fermentation the wines are tasted and selected for ageing in a wide variety of different styles inspired by the white wines of the Jura and Jerez. Small batches are selected for under flor yeast ageing and others for Madeira style ageing to create characterful wines for the final blend.

Once a year we draw from the various vintages of matured wines to blend with the fresh wine for bottling as the Smiley release. After fermentation is completed of the current vintage, various wines are tasted and selected for blending into the Smiley whilst others are held back for future releases.

Tasting notes:
'The NV Smiley Chenin Blanc V4 is a blend of vintages between 2015 and 2018, including flor-aged wine, using only old oak. It has an attractive bouquet, featuring scents of dried honey, peach skin and orange pith and a touch of lemon thyme that emerges with aeration; the flor influence is very subtle. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, a lovely waxy texture and notes of ginger and citrus peel toward the finish. This is a fascinating wine, but most importantly, a delicious wine that will put a smile on your face.' – Neal Martin Report 2018, 91/100

'From Chenin Blanc – from four separate vintage, this includes portions fermented under flor, with skin contact as well as maderised. A hint of reduction before peach and citrus plus less primary notes – dried seaweed, yeasty complexity, spice and even a touch of volatile acidity. Rich and broad with tangy acidity, the finish long and gently savoury. Fresher overall and hence less geeky than previous renditions. Alcohol: 12.5%.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 92/100

'The nose presents with forward Chenin Blanc citrus notes of lemon peel, mandarin and stone fruits of peach and apricot. Herbal and floral notes of green tea and chamomile flowers and followed with hints of waxy macadamia, pistachio and almond bringing forward the flor and Madeirised components. Mineral notes of seaweed oyster shell, iodine, ocean mist and kelp are present after the wine begins to breathe finishing off with a honey, pear drop and cinnamon-ginger spice fullness. The palate is weighty, round and full yet fresh, taut and zesty. Upfront the minerality of sea shells and Maldon salt are balanced with the liveliness of fresh citrus notes. The palate is rounded off with the richness of raw almonds, coconut shavings and pistachio shell. The texture is mouth-coating with a persistent finish of tart, fresh lemon, orange peel and cardamom pods. Drink now until 2025. Best paired as an apertif with olives, charcuterie and tapas style foods, seafood, white meat, fresh salads, sushi and will compliment the end of a meal paired with hard cheeses. We suggest decanting this wine prior to drinking.' – Winemaker
