‘A wine that is enjoying a rich run of form at the moment, Nom has established itself among South Africa's Pinot Noir elite. Sourced from shale and clay soils at 700 metres in Elandskloof, it's a wonderfully complex, hibiscus and rose petal-scented red with wild strawberry and goji berry flavours, refined tannins and wonderful palate length. 2024-30’ – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2023, 95/100
‘14% alcohol. From the Kaimansgaat vineyard, with shale soils that have some granite, too. High altitude site (700 m) surrounded by mountains. Hand-picked and sorted, with wild ferment after a cold soak. Aged 10 months in French oak (26% new). Powerful aromatics of sour cherry, dried herbs, liquorice and tar with nice intensity. The palate has a core of vivid, well-defined sweet cherry and plum fruit with some raspberry freshness. Finishes taut with a lick of sour cherry. ‘The 2022 Pinot Noir Saurwein Nom comes from vines located at around 700m in Elandskloof, contains 10% whole bunch and aged for 11 months in 25% new French oak, the rest 6th fill. This has a more opulent bouquet than the Om Pinot Noir, with Morello cherries, wild strawberry and light rose petal scents. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and very smooth in texture. Her family's winemaking history dates back to the 17th century, where her ancestors made 'sour' wine for the Emperor of Austria. Jessica focuses on Pinot Noir and Riesling, producing 3 different wines under her label. One wine produced from the Elandskloof Valley, one from the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge region, and one from the Elgin Valley. |
