Notes

Situated at an altitude of 350 meters above sea level, Les Rontets climat is on the top of the hill which closes the valley of Fuissé towards the south. This is where they grow the grapes producing the Pouilly-Fuissé cuvées Clos Varambon and Les Birbettes.

Pouilly-Fuissé Clos Varambon is a single vineyard, of solid limestone at 350m above sea level, that dates back to 1945. The Château des Rontets has structure and minerality akin to Puligny-Montrachet with scores to match – 91/100 Wine Advocate.

The vinification is made in recent 30-hectoliter oak vats, in 400-liter and 228-liter barrels without new oak. This cuvée is bottled after 12 to 18 months maturing, usually with a light filtration consisting only in a smooth Kieselguhr method. They generally prefer not to fine their wines, as their maturing on lees allows to reach a sufficient stability and because they believe that this process can diminish their aromatic potential.

The Clos Varambon is a wine conceived to be appreciated from its early age.

Tasting notes:
'Bottled in March, the 2016 Pouilly-Fuissé Clos Varambon unfurls in the glass with aromas of peach, green and yellow orchard fruit, almond paste and anise. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, pure and satiny, with an elegantly textural attack, tangy acids and a stony, saline finish. Meager yields of 18 hectoliters per hectare show through in above-average concentration this year. As readers may know, this cuvée is produced from the vines within the Clos that were planted after 1945: it's the château's largest bottling.' – Wine Advocate, 91/100

'(made from the vineyards around the house, except for the oldest vines): Bright yellow. Clean, expressive scents of orange peel, lemon and flint. Concentrated, penetrating wine with an exhilarating, cool lemon-lime edge and serious minerality to cut the impression of thickness. Finishes brisk and firm, with a sensation of strong acidity.' – Stephen Tanzer, Vinous.com, 90-91/100
