Reyneke, Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Notes

The maiden vintage release of the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was in 2013. This particular vineyard, on the south eastern slopes of the Polkadraai Hills, overlooking False Bay, is in their opinion the best the Reyneke farm has to offer. It had been a six year project to finally arrive with a wine they were happy to take to bottle.

Tasting notes:
'Classic cassis & cedar, pencil shavings, tannins remarkably lithe, lovely core of sweet fruit, exceptional 15 more streamlined & polished than 14, the result of stringent selection in the cellar - just 6 barrels chosen, 24 months in new oak after natural fermentation in concrete tanks.' – Platters Wine Guide 2019, 5*

'A change of cooper has vastly improved the quality of this single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, which is fresher and more elegant than in the past. Finesse, graphite and blackcurrant leaf aromas, nuanced tannins and well-integrated wood make this a wine to cellar and treasure.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2018, 95/100

'Whereas the 2014 from this biodynamic producer was “funky” (and I’ve got winemaker Rudiger Gretschel’s permission to say so), the 2015 is so very attractive. Grapes from a vineyard planted in 1994, the wine was matured for 20 months in French oak, 100% new. On the nose, red and black fruit, olive, herbs, rose and violet plus some pencil shavings. The palate is medium bodied with fresh acidity and wonderfully supple tannins, the finish long and super-dry. Nothing too dense or too forceful and in that sense quite far away from Bordeaux, Napa or even some of the more ambitious examples from Stellenbosch itself.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 95/100

'The 2015 Reyneke Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a vineyard that was apparently difficult to farm and necessitated careful pruning. This comes from the best parcel, the Willow vineyard. It was matured in 100% new French barriques (Saury). It has an intense bouquet of blackberry, bilberry and touches of cassis and crushed violet - very pure and almost heady in style. The palate is medium-bodied, offering fine-grained tannin and layers of supple, pencil-lead-infused black fruit and a gentle grip on the finish. There is no 2016 on the horizon as the fruit was not good enough, so stock up on this while you can.' – Neal Martin Report 2018, 94/100
