Notes

The newly released 2017 Delaire Graff Banghoek Reserve Merlot underpins the resurgence of Merlot in SA and is a ‘must’ for all Merlot lovers. It starts with an attractive, perfumed nose with florals and ripe plum notes. Its fruit purity is backed by a wonderfully elegant and fresh palate with succulent, fine tannins. From a 20-year-old single vineyard, this wine ticks all the Merlot boxes – fragrant, medium-bodied, silky tannins and a refined, detailed finish.

Merlot has seen its fair share of criticism but improved winemaking prowess and viticultural practices seem to have aided the recent increase in noteworthy releases. It’s a tough variety to work with due to many factors, including vintage sensitivity. However, with the 2017 vintage turning out to be an excellent one, especially in Stellenbosch, winemaker Morné Frey had the perfect conditions at his disposal to get this Merlot just right!

Tasting notes:
'Delaire Graff's varietal Merlot hails from a 1999 block planted at 380 metres. Elegant, textured and scented, it's at the lighter end of the spectrum, despite its 14.5% alcohol, with leafy tannins, 60% new wood and a textured, fine-grained mid palate. Drink: 2020-25.' – Tim Atkin MW, 92/100

Viticulture:
Despite the drought, the dry, warm weather resulted in healthy grapes and small berries with good intensity. Warm days and below average cool nights during the ripening stage gave the colour and flavour development a positive boost. The grapes were handpicked in the early hours of the morning from the Estate’s oldest single vineyard.

Vinification:
The Merlot was vinified with care and passion. Extensive sorting of the grapes formed part of the quality management process. The grapes were de-stemmed only, not crushed, to ensure gentle extraction of fruit flavours. Punch downs only and matured for 16 months in 80% new French oak barrels.

Alcohol: 14.5%
