Vinicole d'Arbois, Trousseau 2017

Notes

Also known as Bastardo, Trousseau is an ancient variety that leads the wine renaissance in the Jura region of France. Similar to its sister grape Poulsard, it offers Pinot Noir-like aromatics, red fruit and delicious savouriness. Much like Jura’s whites, it is quite rustic but offers the typical ‘Jura lightness’ combined with juicy, red fruits.

Jura has always been best-known for Comté cheese, but no longer. These oxidative wines produced on the rolling hills near the Swiss border have sommeliers around the world swooning. And, if there’s any wine that can best represent the new-wave, hipster wine movement, Trousseau is it!

You don’t get much more authentic than the wines of Fruitière Vinicole d'Arbois – one of the oldest co-operatives in France. It assisted the region in attaining AOC status in 1936 and had a hand in the development of modern Jura. The wines are typical, classic and pure but, most importantly, they offer superb value!

Tasting notes:
'Light in colour but not lacking in weight or depth, the 2017 Trousseau is generous with fruit and flavour. Red cherries, delicate herbs and a hint of Comté combine with florals and orange blossom on the nose. Slate, earth and strawberries lead to soft tannins, good freshness and a long, savoury finish. Glides down a little too dangerously. Drink now. 13% alcohol.' – Roland Peens (July 2019)
