100% Cabernet Sauvignon

A recent blind tasting that pit Stellenbosch 2015s against 2015 Bordeaux saw the Le Riche Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 score a whopping 96 points from Christian Eedes, editor of Winemag.co.za. Once again, this underlines the stature of the 2015 vintage. This is a regal, poised release that shimmers with class. Already offered as part of our Stellenbosch EP 2015 and investment offerings, we have received a small additional allocation to offer our readers. Offering at least two decades of maturation, this is the last chance for collectors.

Christo and his sister Yvonne have taken over the reins from their dad Etienne le Riche, famous for the legendary Rustenberg Cabernets, and the legacy continues with this fine release. The Le Riche Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is usually shy on release and needs time to unfurl; never more so than for this 2015. It abounds with quiet energy and restrained power that follow on to a classy, persistent finish.

Tasting notes:
'From Raithby & Firgrove sites, with longer oak ageing (2 years, 67% new) than standard version. Classic cab in fine 15 vintage shows pure elegance, more refinement than 14. Fine-grained tannins, cool core of cassis fruit. Inherent balance, poise, to evolve well.' – Platter's Guide 2019, 95/100

'The Le Riches make some of the best Cabernet Sauvignons in Stellenbosch, and this stellar 2015 is no exception. Still closed right now, as you’d expect from such a vintage, this has layers of mocha oak, some green herbs, bright acidity and a vigorous core of dark fruit. One for the cellar. 2020-30.' – Tim Atkin, SA Special Report 2018, 94/100

Viticulture:
The season started early in August following a wet and cold winter. Good winter rain meant that the water reserves were in good condition and the vines budded even and early (2 weeks) after a warm August. November had some rain during the flowering period, resulting in reduced crops, but the temperatures remained warm. December had low wind speeds, warm days and cool nights. The perfect combination for developing colour and flavour in the green berries.

Veraison started in late December on the Cabernets, cutting our fishing time short to start preparations for harvest. The temperatures remained warm and dry for January with no significant heatwaves. A cool February preceded the Cabernet picking. This protected the acidity and ensured great phenolic ripeness. In the end it can only be described as a perfect season. We started picking Cabernet on the 18th of February. This is the earlies pick that Etienne has experienced in is 40+ years of making wine! The grapes ripened fast and evenly with our winery team sweating to get all the grapes in the cellar on time. By March 5 we were done with harvest. Very early indeed. The quality is outstanding with deep colour, firm tannins and great length and power on the wines. This is a vintage to age.
