Marengo, Barolo 2014

Notes

The Marengo family is a small producer based in La Morra, Piedmont and has been producing Barolo since 1899. Their 1.5 ha block of Brunate, planted in 1950, represents an incredible one-quarter of their vineyard holdings! The farm is now run by Marco, very successfully, totally on his own after his father Mario passed away in 2001.

The philosophy of Marco is to respect what the vineyards give him, as much as possible. The work in the vines is more important to him than the work in the cellar.

Tasting notes:
'Here's a solid expression of Nebbiolo with delicate, almost Burgundian lines. The 2014 Barolo gives off an initial impression of greater power and density. This effect does not last long because the more you contemplate the bouquet, the more you are made aware of its delicate and fine nature. There are blue fruit aromas backed by very pretty tones of crushed mineral, ash and pressed violets. The mouthfeel is broad and persistent, albeit less dense or rich compared to past vintages. Marco Marenga tells me that 2014 reminds him of the 1996 vintage, thanks to the wine's ability to maintain its natural freshness.' – Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, 92/100

‘Pretty, with floral, cherry, strawberry, tobacco and tar flavors. Elegant and silky, with a grain to the firm tannins. Stays bright and long on the finish. Decant or age for at least three years. Best from 2021 through 2036.’ – Wine Spectator, 92/100
