Thistle and Weed, Brandnetel Chenin Blanc 2017

Notes

A group of friends created Thistle and Weed in 2015 as an opportunity to express their creativity, get their hands dirty and craft small batch wines from the distant nooks and crannies of the Cape.

Farmers often curse Thistles and Weeds; they’re spiny, prickly and a nuisance at the very least. But, it is their tenacity and uncompromising survival skills in which they can draw parallels with the grapevine – considered by many as the ultimate weed. The grapevine has a phenomenal ability to adapt to its surroundings and persist in hostile environments. By the same token it not only survives, but produces fruit that mirrors the trials and tribulations it has endured on a specific site and it is this terroir they want to share with you when you taste their wines.

Tasting notes:
'The 2017 Brandnetel Chenin Blanc was barrel-fermented in third-fill 225-liter French oak and matured 50% in barrels and 50% in stainless steel tanks. It has a clean, pure bouquet of apricot blossom and light peach notes. The palate is very well defined, with crisp acidity and touches of white peach and grapefruit, and leads to a pithy, slightly phenolic finish that maintains its precision and elegance to the last. Bon vin!' – Neal Martin Report 2018, 92/100

'Viticultural consultant Etienne Terblanche and winemaker Stephanie Wiid of Thistle & Weed, whose approach is to seek out interesting pockets of vineyard from around the winelands, recently launched a new wine the form of Brandnetel Chenin Blanc 2017. Grapes from a 0.3ha trial vineyard planted in 1980 with no less than 32 different rootstocks and vinification involved spontaneous fermentation in old barrels before 50% of the wine was matured in tank and the other 50% in barrel for eight months. The nose shows pear, apple and peach, a touch of earth and some spice while the palate is quite lean (alcohol is 12.5%) with bright acidity and a pithy finish. A wine of understated elegance.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 91/100
