Notes

One of SA's defining recent releases is the rare, single-vineyard offering from star winemaker Reenen Borman. Since its release in 2014, the Boschkloof Epilogue Syrah has been called a ‘ground breaking, paradigm-shifting Syrah’ by Greg Sherwood MW, been the first SA wine to crack 98/100 from Tim Atkin MW, and both the 2015 and 2016 have been awarded numerous 95 to 98-point scores.

The 2017 Boschkloof Epilogue Syrah is even more accomplished than previous vintages. If there’s one wine that captures Reenen’s ambition and talent, this is it!

Like Reenen’s other stellar Syrah, Sons of Sugarland, the Epilogue is produced from the scarce SH99 clone. Renowned for its perfume but plagued by a disease that causes the vines to die off, this clone adds detail and purity to this apex release. Reenen says he will bottle it as long as the vineyard allows.

Reserved on the nose, the perfume requires some coaxing, but it is supported by a fine-boned and seriously tannic structure. Considering its track record, the exceptional 2017 vintage, and the fact that Reenen considers it his best release to date, the Epilogue 2017 is in high demand and bound to sell out.

Tasting notes:
'Granitic purity followed by violets. This is the best release so far with an intensity and focus that add weight and gritty granular tannins, plus a considered restraint to a classically styled wine. 400L barrels only with 15% whole bunch pressed. Reductive to start, so be sure to decant else only drink in 2020 onwards. It follows to a tight mineral palate with shy backward red fruits. Brooding with fine meat spice it is slow to evolve, needing a day or so to open up. The wine is muscular with chewy and savoury tannins whilst retaining loads of verve. There is some oak sweetness to finish that is sure to integrate. Lovely calm density at the core, the wine is fluid and will age gracefully but shows remarkable balance when young. Ambitious, accomplished and sheer class. 14% alc.' – James Pietersen (10 April 2019)
