The work of Anselmo Mendes is recognised in Portugal and abroad, not only for the excellence of the wines he produces but also for the surprising and consistent manner in which he innovates. The fermentation of Alvarinho grapes in wooden casks or the use of traditional vinification techniques, such as fermentation on skins, are just some of the methods that set these wines apart in the world of whites.
Tasting notes:
'The 2016 Loureiro Muros Antigos Escolha is unoaked and comes in at 12% alcohol. This adds a layer or two of concentration to the Pássaros Loureiro reviewed this issue, but it also adds far more grip and tension on the finish. That's really the selling point here. It is invigorating, without losing its balance. Beautifully constructed, transparent, bright and crisp, this should be a perfect Loureiro to drink this summer, but it will hold well, too. Its acidity will serve it in good stead. It is a very fine value. Sourced from vines over ten years old, there were 80,000 bottles produced.' – Wine Advocate, 90/100
Anselmo Mendes is regarded as the finest producer of Vinho Verde, the ‘green wine’ of northern Portugal. His style is dry, fresh and vibrant and his wines can age phenomenally well, up to 2 decades in fine vintages!
His most recent achievement came in 2006, when his wine “Muros Antigos Alvarinho 2005” was considered one of the best 100 wines of the world by the magazine Wine Enthusiast. There is no doubt that Anselmo Mendes is responsible for some of the best and most famous wines of the Vinho Verde region.
