Notes

Restless River wines are hand crafted by the Wessels family on their farm in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, next door to the coastal village of Hermanus in the Western Cape, South Africa. The farm is owned and run by Craig and Anne, winemaker and manager respectively.

Tasting notes:
'Fine single-vineyard wine beautifully composed in classic style. 16 pure, expressive lime intensity, underlying nutty richness harmonised, endlessly lengthened by savoury tension. Oak enhanced, 5% new. Texture, structure & balance ensure future pleasure.' – Platters Wine Guide 2019, 5*

'Is this the most Burgundian of Cape Chardonnays? It certainly wouldn’t look out place in a line up of Corton-Charlemagnes. Barrel-fermented in 5% new wood, with some malolactic in 2016 (unusual for Craig Wessels), it’s a crunchy, pithy, citrus-edged wine with flinty, smoky, grapefruit and oatmeal flavours and a remarkably long finish. 2018-25.' – Tim Atkin SA Report 2017, 96/100

Vineyard block:
Restless River farm is in the cooler Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, at 850ft. This wine is from a Single Vineyard registered block of chardonay (the wine is now named after this block). 2.1ha in size, on east and south facing slopes.Shallow top soils vary from grey, sandy gravel to rocky sandstone. Below this lies deep, decomposed granite clay peppered with quartz crystals.
