Rall, White 2016

R280

5 in stock

Notes

Blend:
Chenin blanc, Verdelho, Chardonnay, Viognier

Vineyards:
Mostly Swartland (Paardeberg) and some Stellenbosch (Bottelary and Helderberg)

Soil:
Decomposed granite and some gravel.

Tasting notes:
'Donovan Rall’s white weighed in at its lowest ever alcohol level in 2016, purely because of the early date of the harvest. It’s a stunning blend of Chenin Blanc with some Verdelho, Viognier and Chardonnay, with pear, peach and white flower notes, understated wood, racy acidity and a savoury undertone. 2018-23'. – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2017, 96/100

'Approximately 60% Chenin Blanc, 30% Verdelho, 8% Viognier and 2% Chardonnay. A super-complex nose of potpourri, stone fruit, some yeasty complexity, a little earthiness and spice on the nose. Relatively rich and broad on the palate despite a moderate alcohol of 13%, the finish long and savoury. Nicely assembled and should please this wine’s many fans.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za 93 points

'The 2016 White Blend is a blend of 60% Chenin Blanc, 30% Verdelho and 7% Viognier with 3% Chardonnay. The 2016 includes a new addition to the blend in the form of a new schist vineyard to complement the decomposed granite soils (the vineyard also includes Syrah that will be bottled separately from 2017). Also, it is the first white blend under 14% alcohol. It has a lovely bouquet: nectarine, a hint of praline, lanolin and a hint of walnut that gains more and more delineation with time. The palate is beautifully balanced with a fine line of acidity, just a hint of praline once again on the back palate, nectarine and white peach towards the poised finish. What a superb white blend from Donovan Rall. Drink 2017-2030.' – Neal Martin, 94 points
