The 1999 Vina Real Gran Reserva spent 30 months in French and American oak. Dark ruby-colored, it has an earthy bouquet with notes of mineral and blackberry. Firm, dense, and structured, it still has 2-3 years of aging potential which may help to round out a wine in need of greater generosity.

La Bascula The Charge Red 2009 - 89 R 140.00

Wine:  The Charge Red

Tempranillo 75% Garnacha 25% The Charge evokes the criss-crossing of Rioja by medieval knights and pilgrims on the Santiago de Compostela trail. Working with the excellent Rodolfo Bastida of Bodegas Ramón Bilbao in Haro, Rioja Alta, we have crafted a wine with excellent red berry and spicy fruit with refreshing acidity balanced by fine vanilla flavours from oak maturation. The Charge red is made from grapes from all over the Rioja region - 75% Tempranillo, 25%. 4 different vineyard blocks were used and the wine was aged for an average 9 months in a mix of French and Amercian oak barrels.

The 2003 Vina Bosconia has another enticing bouquet: hints of cooked meat, hickory, peat and rosemary that is beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with firm dry tannins and a poised, lifted earthy finish with touches of soy and sea salt on the aftertaste. This deserves several more years in bottle. Drink 2018-2030+

The 2005 Cubillo Tinto Crianza has a wonderful bouquet with leathery red fruit augmented by subtle hints of undergrowth, tobacco and a touch of spice. The palate is medium-bodied with a bit of piquancy on the entry. The acidity is quite sharp and it is missing a little flesh and weight towards the tensile finish. Drink now-2018.

San Vicente San Vicente 2007 WA 92 11 R 495.00

Wine:  San Vicente

The 2007 San Vicente is in bottle but not yet released. It exhibits a similar aromatic and flavor profile to the 2008 but appears to be a more forward offering that should provide pleasure through 2022. Senorio de San Vicente is one of several outstanding estates owned and operated by the Eguren family. The wine is made from 100% Tempranillo Peludo known for its tiny berries and exceptional aromatics. The grapes are sourced from a single vineyard and typically aged for 20 months in new, mostly French oak before bottling without filtration.

San Vicente San Vicente 2010 WA 93 36 R 545.00

Wine:  San Vicente

Like the 2009, the 2010 San Vicente is produced from selected Tempranillo Peludo grapes from a south-facing 18-hectare vineyard planted on argilo-calcareous soil in San Vicente de la Sonsierra in Rioja Alta in 1985. The destemmed grapes are fermented in inox vats with pumping-over, malolactic and 19-month aging in new oak barrels, 90% of which are French and the remaining 10% American. During its upbringing the wine is racked every four months. This 2010 is spectacular, starting with its robe, of a bright, shiny ruby color with a nose full of notes of blood orange and more red than black fruit complicated with aromas of licorice and cumin. The medium-bodied palate shows round, buttery tannins which give the wine a satin texture, with very good acidity balanced by superb concentration of fruit. One word defines this wine: balance. Bravo! 60,000 bottles were filled in July 2012. Drink 2015-2028.

Sierra Cantabria Crianza 2008 RP 89 - S/O

Wine:  Crianza

Another impressive effort is their 100% Tempranillo, the 2008 Crianza. From a more challenging vintage, this unfined/unfiltered cuvee spent 14 months in French and American oak. Its deep ruby/plum color is followed by notes of cedar wood, crushed chalk, black currants, cherries and hints of herbs and underbrush. This supple-textured, medium-bodied, deliciously fruity, deep red should drink well for 4-6 years.

Sierra Cantabria Finca El Bosque 2011 WA 94 - S/O

Wine:  Finca El Bosque

The 2011 Finca El Bosque again comes from the same site and sees a similar upbringing. Its color is darker than other vintages, because of its youth, and it has an extremely primary nose that is still very ungiving. With time, you start feeling notes of Belgian chocolate, ripe blueberries, blackberries and damsons. The full-bodied palate is juicy with chunky tannins and perfectly integrated acidity that makes the wine coat your mouth without being aggressive. It doesn’t feel like a heavy wine at all, despite being a real bodybuilder underneath a silk robe. It’s so young it feels like eating fresh Tempranillo grapes. A great vintage for El Bosque that will require a good two to three years in bottle to start showing its true value and how power can be combined with elegance. 4,000 bottles produced. Drink 2016-2027.

Sierra Cantabria Gran Reserva 2004 WA 90 16 R 350.00

Wine:  Gran Reserva

The 2004 Gran Reserva was aged for 24 months in 25% new French oak. Dark ruby-colored, it delivers a nose of roasted herbs, mineral, wood smoke, lavender, and black cherry. Ripe on the palate with plenty of savory fruit, it has good grip, considerable depth, and a lengthy, firm finish. It will benefit from 2-3 years of additional bottle age and drink well from 2012 to 2024. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate

Sierra Cantabria Organza Blanco 2010 WA 91 15 R 235.00

Wine:  Organza Blanco

The 2010 Organza contains Viura (54 %), Malvasia (27 %) and Garnacha Blanca (19 %) grapes from 45- to 60-year-old vines in San Vicente de la Sonsierra planted on chalk-rich soils at 460 to 525 meters altitude, and fermented with yeasts from their own vineyards in new French oak barrels after a 14-hour cold soak. The wine is aged in contact with the fine lees for eight months and the lees were stirred twice per week during the first six months. 8,500 bottles were produced. The wine has a bright, light golden color and a subtle nose of chamomile, pollen and beeswax intermixed with notes of white pepper, apple and quince aromas. The palate is quite full-bodied, with piercing flavors of lees and honey and even a citric hint (grapefruit). It has a clean, delineated acidity that is the backbone of the wine. Drink now-2020.

Sierra Cantabria Reserva Magnums 2006 RP 89 1 R 500.00

Wine:  Reserva Magnums

The 2006 Reserva went through malolactic in barrel and was aged for 18 months in 20% new French and American oak. Balsamic, Asian spice, incense, smoke, and violet aromas form the bouquet of this round but slightly superficial Reserva. The wine is supple and the tannins are well-integrated but it is in need of greater depth and concentration, an affliction common to a number of wines from the 2006 Rioja vintage.

Vinedos de Pagenos El Puntido 2010 WA 93 36 R 545.00

Wine:  El Puntido

The 2010 El Puntido is named after the vineyard in Laguardia (Alava) where the Tempranillo grapes are sourced – 25 hectares at 600 meters altitude with borderline climate for Tempranillo and a very high content of chalk which make for very fresh wines. The grapes ferment with their own yeast in stainless steel, malolactic fermentation is carried out in French oak barrel where the wine ages for 16 months. It has a very strong note of licorice and some smoke from the toast of the barrels with black and red fruit. It has an electric acidity with extremely fine tannins and very good balance. It feels young and undeveloped, and will benefit from some more time to get a better integration of the oak aromas into the wine, as the palate ensures there’s enough stuffing in there to age for a long time. A fresh and elegant Puntido. 48,000 bottles produced. Drink 2016-2023.

Vinedos de Pagenos El Puntido Gran Reserva 2006 WA 92 36 R 660.00

Wine:  El Puntido Gran Reserva

The 2006 El Puntido Gran Reserva is pure Tempranillo grapes from the Puntido vineyard that are selected from the eastern-most part of the vineyard close to Laguardia, which is more exposed to the north winds and gives a wine of marked tannins that needs more time in barrel and is ideal to create a Gran Reserva. This wine ages for 24-26 months in barrel and is kept in bottle for a further five years. The 2006 is still dark ruby-colored, with an open and expressive nose of leather, cold bonfire, incense and steak tartar notes and a medium-bodied palate with some gritty tannins and very pure flavors where the leather and meaty notes linger in the aftertaste. This is the most classical wine I’ve ever seen from the Eguren family, and an exceptional effort for the 2006 vintage. Modernity meets tradition! Drink now-2022.

Vinedos de Pagenos La Nieta 2011 WA 96 4 R 1,300.00

Wine:  La Nieta

The 2011 La Nieta is a 4,000-bottle cuvee of pure Tempranillo sourced from a single vineyard in Paganos (Laguardia). As one would expect, this 2011 is extremely young, but keeps the freshness you always find in the wines from this vineyard, perhaps with a little more structure than the 2010. It is dense, powerful yet elegant. The nose is extremely primary with notes of fruit (ripe peach), licorice, and the oak perfectly folded into the juicy wine showing just a hint of spices. This is a great La Nieta in the making. Drink 2016-2030.
