Notes

52% Colombard and 48% Chenin

2018 was the 4th vintage of the Patatsblanc and again the unique quality of the Colombard (33 year old) and Steen (34 year old) components blew them away.

It was also the 2nd vintage they used grapes from 2 younger blocks on the farm – a Steen block 11 years old and a Colombard block 20+ years old. The quality of these two blocks again exceeded their expectation and has them very excited for working with them in the future.

A similar process was followed as with the Steen. Grapes were of high quality and harvested around mid-February. With even ripening conditions assuring good acids and great concentration. After settling, the wines were put into older barrels. They acquired a new vessel this vintage - a cement egg - and they were so impressed by the quality and character of the wine that came from it they bought another for the 2019 vintage. This component has given the final wine a lift and again sees the wine over deliver and is a wine they are very proud of.

Tasting notes:
'The blend this year, 52% Colombard and 48% Chenin Blanc, is closer to the 50/50 blend that is the aim. Fresh on entry, followed by an immediately textured impact, crushed stone, white blossoms, stone fruit and juicy, focused acidity. There is a wonderful mid-palate with a vibrant acidity drawing to a savoury end.' – James Pietersen (March 2019)
